The Friends of Capitol Riverside Youth Sports Park was formed by a group of parents frustrated by the lack of field space for young athletes in Washington DC. Since forming in 2010, CRYSP has engaged with the community around the RFK stadium to develop a joint vision of how this unused parcel of asphalt could be activated for community use. The Mayor and City Council agreed with our community-inspired design and began construction at the site in 2018. In May 2019, our vision was realized as three new fields and other amenities opened for public use as The Fields at RFK Campus.

Our vision was one of green waterfront space that would be a gathering place for youth and adult sports. The Fields complex has already alleviated overcrowding on existing nearby fields and is making the area a destination for those that want to exercise, enjoy the waterfront, bike, or hike on Kingman Island.

Re-claiming this area as usable space also helps solve the storm water runoff issues that are associated with the existing parking lots. CRYSP DC won the contract to serve as operator of the new complex. CRYSP DC is still employing its advocacy and design skills to identify additional areas in the city for play spaces.

The three founding youth organizations of CRYSP DC are Capitol Hill Little League, Sports on the Hill, and Washington Capital Futbol Club. DC Fray, District Sports, Washington Area Frisbee Club, Living Classrooms and DC SCORES all joined the coalition. Board members serve as individuals, not representatives of any other organization.

Meet the team.
